Contented Broadband:
This is the type of broadband that BT and Sky provide and what we would call ‘domestic’ broadband. It is not a solution recommended for business. There’s a big temptation to go with a large provider like Sky, BT or Virgin, it’s cheap for a start and they’re names that you know. But Contended isn’t built for business use.
Contended runs through a shared line, so just like in the video above, the more users that are logged on the less ‘line’ you get and your speeds are disrupted. If your broadband is contended then sometimes you’ll get what you pay for, but a lot of the time you won’t. So what starts at for example at, 15mbps download when you’re the only device connected is soon depleted as it’s diluted between different devices and people.
Uncontended Broadband:
AKA Business Broadband. It’s your line and yours alone. You pay for what you get and you get what you pay for.
It is safe and reliable. Independently run away from BT / Openreach your connectivity will be looked after and maintained. If your connection is looked after by us, then you know that we have your business’s best interests at heart. No big call centres, no fobbing you off.
In the simplest of terms broadband enables you and your business to connect to the internet, it’s very important you get it right.
Your business might need a connection for a POS system, for M2M management, for your telephone system, or just to listen to your tunes on Spotify.
Choosing the right broadband is essential – what you need and how much you need will depend on your business activities, so first you need to get an understanding of what it is you’ll be using day to day and at peak times.

At MCL we’ve got lots of connectivity options:
ADSL
ADSL is the old copper wire from the exchange to a cabinet and then on to your office router. Not known for its speed or integrity. If you’re still on ADSL we would strongly advise you to move over to a better, safer and more secure solution like FTTC or FTTP.
Satellite
If you’re in a remote location then a satellite connection might be the only way you can get connectivity. It’s not a common solution, but it’s an excellent failsafe if you’re not close to an exchange.
SOGEA / FTTC
We’ve written a lot about this before here. It is the MCL preferred method of business connectivity. Secure and easily installed.
FTTP
Great for larger businesses, or businesses that have a lot of devices connected. With fibre from the exchange to the cabinet and from the cabinet to your office / business, it’s fast and secure.
Leased Line
The best of the best, for the business that does not compromise on the requirements it has. A leased line is your own dedicated line, straight from the exchange. No interference, no congestion, no security issues.
